Researchers specializing in infectious disease at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada are turning to cannabis as they construct a new COVID-19 virus vaccine candidate. The research team says that a plant-based antigen could be simpler to create commercially on a wide scale than animal-based antigens.
Zyus Life Sciences, a medical cannabis firm based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, will ascertain if cannabis-based chemicals can play a part in the struggle from the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. This past year, the firm received its permit from Health Canada to create cannabis-based medical products.
Zyus Life Sciences partnered with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) in the University of Saskatchewan in an effort to develop proteins to get a vaccine candidate with the cannabis plant. It’s one of several attempts in the race for a workable vaccine.
